PhD program in pure and applied mathematics
Our department offers a PhD program in pure and applied mathematics.
This is a four year research program culminating in submission of a
research thesis. Candidates who want to join the course must have
completed prior study at a master level and got a Master of Sciences
degree in mathematics or a related scientific discipline. Thus,
students are expected to begin their PhD research with a solid
background in mathematics, which they successively improve throughout
the course of their PhD studies. The students are expected to write
several papers before they submit their dissertation. During their
first three years of the program students must satisfactorily complete
a course sequence consisting of four courses (two courses in the first
year and one in the second and the third year) on different aspects of
mathematics. Moreover all students continue through each year of the
program participating in scientific seminars and serving a teaching
assistantship on the undergraduate level (the teaching load for a PhD
student is between 10 and 90 hours at the discretion of the Director of
the Department). The PhD program culminates in submission and defence
of a research dissertation, that usually take place at the end of the
fourth year o study.
Instytut matematyki prowadzi studia doktoranckie w zakresie matematyki.
Program studiów obejmuje cztery lata kształcenia zakończone
przedstawieniem rozprawy doktorskiej. Kandydaci na studia doktoranckie
muszą mieć ukończone studia na poziomie magisterskim (tj. drugi stopień
studiów) oraz posiadać stopień magistra matematyki lub pokrewnej
dyscypliny naukowej. Oczekuje się, że studenci studiów doktoranckich
rozpoczynają naukę posiadając solidną wiedzę z zakresu matematyki,
która zostaje następnie pogłębiona w trakcie studiów. Przed złożeniem
właściwej rozprawy doktorskiej, studenci standardowo publikują kilka
artykułów w czasopismach naukowych. W ciągu pierwszych trzech lat
studiów, studenci uczestniczą w czterech wykładach (dwa wykłady w
trakcie pierwszego roku i po jednym na drugim i trzecim roku)
dotyczących różnych aspektów matematyki. Ponadto każdy student jest
zobowiązany do uczestnictwa w seminariach naukowych oraz odbywa
praktykę dydaktyczną (pensum dydaktyczne doktoranta wynosi od 10 do 90
godzin rocznie i jest ustalane przez Dyrektora Instytutu Matematyki).
Studia doktoranckie kończą się złożeniem i obroną rozprawy doktorskiej,
co zazwyczaj ma miejsce pod koniec czwartego roku studiów.
