Introduction

European Commission promotes cooperation among institutions of higher education and considers it to be an important factor for improving the level of education for students and institutions alike. The most important single element of the cooperation is studying abroad for interested students. To promote that cooperation the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) has been developed. The goal of the ETCS is to improve the procedures and the wider recognition of studying abroad. The ECTS is based on three "core" elements: information (on study programme and student's achievements), learning agreement (between cooperating institutions), and ECTS credits (characterizing the workload needed to complete successfully a given course unit). ECTS credits range from 1 to 60. They determine the amount of work needed for the the course unit in relation to the total amount of work necessary for a student to complete a full academic year at a chosen academic institution. The total of 300 credits is required to obtain a M. Sc. degree at the University of Silesia. The ECTS grading scale as compared to the traditional Polish scale is given in the following table.

ECTS grading scale

ECTS grade Polish grade Definition
A 5.0 excellent - outstanding achievement - only minor errors permitted
B 4.5 very good - significantly above average with some errors
C 4.0 good - generally good work with a number of errors
D 3.5 satisfactory - average work with substantial errors
E 3.0 sufficient - results satisfying minimal criteria
F 2.0 fail - before awarding credits student has to study the whole course again

University of Silesia was established in Katowice in 1968 as the ninth university in Poland. The new university was founded on the basis of Higher School of Pedagogy (Pedagogical University) that existed in Katowice since 1948, and the Branch of the Jagiellonian University. The Branch was founded in 1965 and was preceded by the Study of Mathematics and Physics that Jagiellonian University opened in Katowice two years earlier. At present the University campuses are situated in five towns: Katowice, Sosnowiec, Cieszyn, Chorzów and Jastrzębie Zdrój. The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry is located in Katowice.

University of Silesia is a state school and comprises ten faculties of Biology and Environmental Protection, Philology, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Social Sciences, Education and Psychology, Law and Administration, Radio and Television, Engineering Sciences, and of Pedagogic and Artistic Education. Besides there are eight interfaculty units, i.e. Silesian International Business School, International School of Political Sciences, Business Language College, School of Management, Centre for Studies on the Human and Natural Environment, School of Polish Language and Culture, Interfaculty Individual Study of Arts, Interfaculty Individual Study of Mathematics and Natural Science.

The University employs over 1500 academic staff members, including more than 110 full professors and 250 doctors with habilitation degree. The total enrolment exceeds 35 000 students who follow full-time, evening and external programmes.

Institute of Mathematics is composed of 14 departments concentrated on different fields of research.
These are:

The Institute employs 80 scholars. Among them there are 10 Full Professors and 15 Doctors with Habilitation degree. The enrolment at full-time and extern studies is about 500 students.

Members of the Institute take part in 30 research programmes and publish several dozens of research, survey and popularizing papers a year in national and foreign journals. The results are presented at numerous conferences and symposia. The Institute maintains strict scientific contacts with many research centers both in Poland and abroad. Annales Mathematicae Silesianae, a scientific journal, is published at the Institute and reviewed by international review journals.

The Institute offers a five years mathematical full-time study as well as a three years licence study which can be completed with two years programme leading to Master of Mathematics degree. Starting form the third year the full-time study is continued in one of the four specializations: informatics, teaching, pure mathematics, and applied mathematics. The extern study follows the programme of the teaching specialization. Finally, a four years PhD Degree programme is also offered by the Institute. The students have at their disposal three well-equipped computer laboratories, a library and a lecture room where they find the most recent issues of the mathematical publications.
